A CRITICAL 30 SECONDS: Every year, we are required to issue a survey to families to collect information that ensures Beaverton receives its full allocation of state and federal funding. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT: Get ready to get the new school year rolling by joining us for a couple key events before school officially starts. First up is the orientation for incoming sixth- and seventh-graders, set for Monday, Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at BJSHS. Then on Wednesday, Aug. 14, kids and families in grades K-12 are invited to the campus-wide Open House from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Finally, it all kicks off for real on Monday, Aug. 19 with the first day of school, which is a half-day. THE SHORT LIST: Attention, BES Parents and Students: Thanks to some creative resource management by BES staff with grant funding, we are not asking families to provide classroom supplies this year. Of course, we will always gratefully accept donations of items like tissues, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, paper towels and adhesive bandages. But in terms of what to bring, all we ask from parents is that their children show up at school with a backpack, a water bottle and a smile - healthy and rested and ready to learn. Buckle up for the best year ever, Beavers!

YOUTH VOLLEYBALL will have a different vibe this year for kids in grades 4, 5 and 6 as Beaverton will be participating in the Mid-Michigan Youth Volleyball League. Team signups are underway, so visit the group's Facebook page at bit.ly/4c2W6OQ for the details and registration information.

READY OR NOT: Heads up, students in Grades 6, 7 and 8! School starts Aug. 19, and here’s a list of recommended items you should bring. One spiral notebook and one folder in each of these colors: red (ELA), yellow (Math), blue (Social Studies), green (Science) and orange (Elective); Sharpened #2 pencils; One pack of sharpened colored pencils; Highlighters; One pack of sticky notes; One glue stick; One three-ring binder to hold folders and notebooks; One pencil pouch to put in three-ring binder to hold pencils, colored pencils, highlighters, sticky notes, etc. Each student will be issued a 13” Chromebook and charger; they will be required to properly care for their computer and keep it charged. A case will not be provided with this device. Teachers always appreciate donations of tissues, whiteboard markers and disinfectant wipes. #GoBeavers

A NEW LEADER: Michael Hugan has been selected as Beaverton Schools' new superintendent following a thorough three-month search process. The district’s board of education made it official at its meeting Monday with a unanimous vote approving Hugan’s hire. More details at beavertonschools.net. #GoBeavers

ROUND TWO: The Beaverton Schools Board of Education conducted interviews of four finalists for its superintendent position Monday and Tuesday this week, and two of those candidates will be brought back for second interviews on Monday, June 17. Michael Hugan will speak with the board from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., followed by Jennifer Thrush from 5 to 6 p.m. These meetings, held at the BJSHS Media Center, are open to the public.

BES Running Club had its final event, a one mile Fun Run, today on the high school track. Congrats to all for another great year of running club!

VISITING BJSHS IN JUNE? Due to construction on the BJSHS Main Parking Lot beginning June 3, access to the building will be routed through the back (north) side of the building. Visitors should enter campus through either the Tonkin Street entrance or the driveway next to the central office and park in the areas designated in YELLOW below. They should enter the English Hallway on the east end of the building through Door #20. If you are unable to enter the building, dial 989.246.3010 for assistance.

THE SATISFACTION OF A DAY AFIELD: If you haven't hugged a Beaverton Elementary PTO member lately, do so ASAP. They do great things for our school all year through, and today they put on a whale of a Field Day, offering students games, fun and the chance to dunk an adult without repercussion. SEND OFF FOR SUMMER LEARNING! Thank you to all of the K-3 family members who attended our Popsicles with Parents. It was a great opportunity to learn about how important it is to have FUN learning this summer. Each student left with a summer take-home bag full of games and goodies to keep summer exciting and learning loss at bay!
